Our all in one printer, Brother MFC-240C had a problem and for some reason it stop working. Every time I turn on the printer it shows on the LCD “Clean Unable 46″ error message. What the LCD suggests is to read the User’s Guide for further troubleshooting. That didn’t help me at all because it stated in the guide, probable causes are 1. The machine has a mechanical problem and/or 2. A foreign objects such as paper clip or ripped paper is in the machine. Their solution is to “Open the scanner cover and remove any foreign objects inside the machine. If the error message continues, disconnect the machine from the power for several minutes and then reconnect it.” I followed the instructions and did a total clean over. I used q-tips, glass cleaner, cloth to remove the dust that could be interfering for the printer to work, apparently to no avail it still ain’t working.

I googled it and finally I found the answer to my problem. All you need to do is to reset the purge counter. These steps worked in MFC620CN/420CN/410CN/210C/240C and FAX2440C model.

To reset purge counter

1) Enter machine maintenance mode (on MFC240C all four photo/copy/fax/scan lights flash in maintenance mode). Care is needed in maintenance mode, otherwise critical settings may be inadvertently corrupted.

FAX models with numerical keypads: Press the Menu/Set, *, 2, 8, 6 and 4 keys within two seconds. (if you fail to complete the correct key sequence within two seconds, press the Stop key to try again).

Other (non-FAX) models: Press the Menu/Set and Black Start keys. Next press the “up arrow” key four times to enter the maintenance mode).

2) Press the 8 then 0 keys in the initial stage of the maintenance mode to call up the machine’s log information list (function code 80).

3) Press the Black Start key several times to scroll through the log information list to reach the purge counter. The purge counter is the 25th item in the list.

4) Press the 2, 7, 8, and 3 keys in this order to reset the purge count to zero.

5) Press the Stop/Exit key to return to the initial stage of the maintenance mode.

6) Press the 9 key twice to return to the standby state.

Last week I posted an article about localhost doesn’t work in Windows Vista using NOD32 v3.0. Today I almost have the same issue but this time I suspected that it’s my Windows Defender that stopped my Apache from running on Xampp and gave me an error Port 80. I noticed that the Windows Defender is asking me to scan my computer so I decided to let the program finish scanning but to no avail, it did the same thing. Error saying “Apache HTTP Server has stopped working”. According to the pop-up message, Windows is trying to check for solutions as expected by Microsoft nothing was found.

I’m losing my patience because I need to sleep and in a few hours I’ll be going to work. I just cant seem to finish designing a theme that I’ll be releasing to the public soon. Oh well, things are not on my side these days. So what I did is restart my computer and hoping that it might be a glitch only. Unfortunately same thing happened. I didn’t bother to turn off any of my internet security such as Nod32 Anti-virus, Windows Defender and Windows Firewall because I’m positive that those programs I just mentioned are not the culprit.

Further troubleshooting: Since my localhost has several folders I tried the old folder that I haven’t been using for months now. e.g. http://localhost/”oldfolder”. It gave me hope because I was able to view it, I thought its already fixed. So I went back to new folder were I’m getting the Apache has stopped error apparently nothing was change. Then I sensed that its not really the apache thats giving me headaches but rather it is something in my coding. After several minutes of debugging my codes, I was able to solve the issue. It’s a TEMPLATEPATH php code that shouldn’t be inside the same php file. Who’s to blame? ME

Getting the same problem? If my solution didn’t work, care to share your fix?

I turned on my computer and my Windows Security Center prompted me to upgrade my Eset Nod32 Anti-Virus v2.7 due to out of date. Argh! That is my initial reaction because that means I have to uninstall my old version of Nod32. I used to have AVG Free, Mcafee and Norton Anti-Virus but those programs slows down my computer. I like my anti-virus now because it really does protect my computer. Ever since I installed it in my computer I’m free of viruses, worms, and other unwanted programs. To add on that almost everyday it updates the latest virus definition without bugging while doing something in my computer.

It took me less than 15 minutes to download, install and reboot my computer before I can do my work again. I thought everything is perfect and when I start to access my localhost using Flock browser it just gives me a blank page, or connection reset error, and I noticed that when I type localhost it redirects to www.localhost.com. I tried Firefox but it did the same thing. I also double check and make sure my xampp program is running.

I told myself that it is something to do with Nod32 because that is the only change I made on my computer before this issue occurred. So I did a little research on this and I ended up editing my hosts file.

To access your hosts file go to.
1. C:(or Windows Folder)\\Windows\System32\drivers\etc
2. Open the
HOSTS
file using Notepad or any HTML Editor.
3. Look and delete
:. localhost
or
:. 127.0.0.1

4. Save the file as hosts
5. Open your browser type localhost — it should work.

*I’m using Windows Vista Home Basic, Xampplite and Nod32 v3.0

Disclaimer:
If something happens on your computer don’t blame me.

My officemate lend me his dvd, a tv series of Heroes when I found out that my dvd drive is not in mycomputer’s list. I checked it in the device manager that my MATSHITA DVD-RAM UJ-850S ATA device has a yellow question mark beside it. I looked the properties of the device, there’s an error message that says “Windows can’t load the driver for this device. The driver might be damaged or missing.” I uninstalled and reboot my computer hoping that it will reinstall the dvd driver, unfortunately it did the same thing. I grab one of my boot disc to know if my dvd is busted, but it loads fine and it read the drive. So I concluded that if it works outside windows then definitely its a Windows problem. Then I started blaming again that I’m using Windows Vista, argh! Eversince I bought a new laptop with a Vista installed, I keep on encountering a lot of problems and sometimes I can’t install some programs that I normally used in Windows XP.

Anyway back to my problem, I remembered when I was still working in DELL as technical support agent I encountered the same problem with one of my customers. I used to delete something in the registry, but cant figure-out what that is. I searched the support site of <a href=”http://support.microsoft.com”>microsoft</a> and found this <a href=”http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314060″>Article ID:314060</a> Here’s a simple steps to do it.

Tweak your Registry Editor

1. Click Start > Run.
2. Type regedit in the Open text box and click OK.
3. In the Registry Editor dialog box, navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class and select the {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318} key, which appears as a folder.
4. Select File > Export (Windows XP and Vista)
5. In the Export Registry File dialog box, select Selected Branch under Export Range, name the file (for example, CDDVDkey.reg), and click Save to save the file to the Desktop.
6. In the right panel of the Registry Editor, select the LowerFilters line, and then choose Edit > Delete. Click Yes in the Confirm Key Delete dialog box.
7. Select the UpperFilters line, and then choose Edit > Delete. Click Yes in the Confirm Key Delete dialog box.
8. Close the Registry Editor.
9. Restart Windows.

So far everything is up and running. I’m hoping this fixed my problem.

Everytime I turn-off my computer I always have to wait for more than a minute before it will totally shuts down the system. I admit I have a lot of startup programs running but those programs used to run in my Windows XP computer, but I don’t have to wait that long. I have (1) 512MB and (1) 256MB memory installed in XP, in Vista (2) 512MB memory installed if you notice I have bigger memory now but the performance is not nice. I want to share something that might help you do the trick. Though it will not really speed-up that much but atleast a few secs will help shorten the wait time.

Tweak your Registry Editor

* click Start > type in search box regedit
* In the Registry Editor dialog box, navigate to
+HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
+SYSTEM
+CurrentControlSet
+Control

* set WaitToKillServiceTimeout=20000 (which sets it to 20 seconds)
