On this post I will show you how to hide a particular post on your blog’s front page without the need to install a plugin. I have nothing against WordPress plugins it’s just that I’m the type of WordPress blogger who is as much as possible doesn’t want to install a plugin especially if there’s a code that I can use and do it manually by editing my theme’s template. On today’s post I will show you on how to exclude categories to be posted on your frontpage of your WordPress blog. This WordPress tweak has been tested in WordPress 2.3. This definitely works especially if your frontpage has page navigation.

* This varies depending on your theme, this is commonly used in a normal wordpress blog layout.

Go to admin dashoard > manage > categories. Look for the category you want to exclude and identify the category ID. e.g. we want to hide category ID: 8.

Still in the admin dashboard > go to Presentation > Theme Editor > open *index.php

Inside the *index.php file, look for the line that says “<?php if (have_posts()) : ?> ”
then paste this code after that line:
! don’t forget to change the id to your chosen category id

<?php $page = (get_query_var('paged')) ? get_query_var('paged') : 1; query_posts("cat=-8&paged=$page"); ?>

and before this code. “ <?php while (have_posts()) : the_post(); ?> “

Then Update your *index.php file.

The other day I wrote a post on How To: Customize your own style in showing the number of comments. Today I’ll be discussing on how to highlight the author’s comments. It’s just easy to follow and I know you can do it in just a few minutes.

To start of, we are going to edit your comments.php and style.css. If you are a WordPress user definitely you know what I’m talking about. For newbies,Here’s an easy way to access your site. go to admin panel> presentation> theme editor> then just click the you want to change.

Let’s begin.

Open the comments.php within that file. Search for the code that read as

<?php foreach ($comments as $comment) : ?>
<li class=”<?php echo $oddcomment; ?>” id=”comment-<?php comment_ID() ?>”

Remove the second line and change it using the code below. Don’t forget to modify the ones that are marked red.

<li class=”<?php if ($comment->comment_author == ‘TYPE AUTHOR’S NAME‘ &&
$comment->comment_author_email == ‘TYPE AUTHOR’S EMAIL ADDRESS‘) echo ‘authorcomment’;
else echo $oddcomment; ?>” id=”comment-<?php comment_ID() ?>”>

After you update your comments.php, we will add styles to it. Open your style.css, we are going to design the class for “authorcomment“. Look on comments section and add this code.

.authorcomment {
background: #666666;
}

This code varies on how your theme was made. Analyze the code but once you understand the principle you can apply it in your theme.

I was looking for a plugin that works like a Peel Corner Ads. If you don’t know what a Peel Corner Ad is, the image on the left is a sample of what I’m talking about. there’s a live demo here on my blog, just look on the top right hand side and you will notice a peel-like paper sheet that says “See Inside”. When I was searching for a WordPress plugin all I see was a PagePeel Script that you have to pay that ranges from $5 to $30. Since I’m being a cheapskate and doesn’t want to waste money for such a thing, I would like to thank adivorblog who wrote a PagePeel script for his released Adivor Ready Peel Theme. Get yours now, just follow the steps below.

If you don’t want to use his theme, I’ll just show you how you can also add his script on your blog.

Download this Page Peel Script File and unzip it.

Open the PagePeel folder and edit the PagePeel.js file.
- Edit your preferred url on the one that says ‘Type your link here’.

Create 2 image files, 1 small (75×75) and 1 big (500×500),
Look at the sample images for an idea inside the images folder. a psd file for big image is included to edit it in Photoshop.

Add a script tag in the body of your html page that points to pagepeel.js.
- Ex. <script src=”./pagepeel/PagePeel.js” type=”text/javascript”></script>
- Most of the time you add this code after the <body>.

Upload the PagePeel folder to the root of your server.

There are several ways to use this script.

Boosting your feed subscriptions.

A featured article on your blog that you want your readers to get notice.

You can suggest this to your advertisers to use this to promote on your blog.

A product you are endorsing and more…

Are you going to use this on your blog? If so, how will you use this PagePeel script?

If you want to make money out of your Page Peel Ads, Sign-up for AdToll Now.

Today WordPress releases it’s new stable version application WordPress 2.3.3, supposed to be an “urgent security release”. The said version was about “A flaw found in our XML-RPC implementation such that a specially crafted request would allow any valid user to edit posts of any other user on that blog” according to WordPress blog.

Is it necessary to upgrade your to WordPress 2.3.3? No, it is not the end of the if you do not update your WordPress. However, you are putting your site at an increased risk of being exploited. A bug was found on WP-Forum plugin so if you are using the plugin they suggest to remove it until the author updates its version.

It’s not hard to make your theme unique. Probably some of you are using a free WordPress theme and somehow you almost have an identical blog with a co-blogger. Changing the colors, fonts, header can do the trick to tell your readers this is different from the others. Here one way to tweak your blog in your own style by changing the way your number comments appear.
This tutorial is not limited for those bloggers who uses free themes it’s also for those bloggers who have a design of their own theme. You might get bored seeing your blog with 0 comments, 1 comment, 2 or more comments and would like to customize them. This will also encourage your readers to leave a comment. Well if you don’t get the picture of what I’m saying just look at the image below to understand.

Below are some samples I found in the blogosphere.

- used to be from carlocab.com. It changed after replacing a new theme.

- from shoemoney.com

You want to learn how they did it?

With these 3 easy steps you can come-up with your own style.

1. Open your index.php and/or single.php.

2. Edit each page and look for the lines that read.

< ?php comments_popup_link('No Comments »', '1 Comment »', '% Comments »'); ?>

3. Change the way you want them to appear in your page. Style your own comments by changing only the one on red marks.

< ?php comments_popup_link('Leave a comment »', '1 Comment - Want to Join Him? »', '% Comments - Want to Join Them? »'); ?>

How about you? What’s your style? Care to share?

Eureka! you are exposing yoursite to everyone. You don’t want others to snoop over your folders and find something interesting right? What if someone is stalking you? Will you allow them to hack your website? We all don’t want that to happen. Here’s a very easy way to prevent them from checking your website.

1. Open your file, .htaccess
* find it in your root directory.

2. Just add this line
Options -Indexes

and you are good to go!

Very simple right?

*** since we are editing a very sensitive file (.htaccess) make sure you back-up your files.
